Jetting lance and Chain cutter for BSS III Boskalis
Machinefabriek Barth was approached by Boskalis to engineer, manufacture, and install a Chain cutter module (CCM) for their new cable-laying tool, BSS III. Underwater cables are installed by cable-laying vessels that transport and deploy these cables at sea. We developed several specialized tools for this purpose, most of which are used in the offshore wind industry for cable installation.
Together with our team of engineers, we successfully designed and built an ultramodern cutting module that can be removed from the BSS III as a separate unit. Since the engineering phase ran parallel to the development of the BSS III, teamwork was crucial to the project's success. One of the biggest challenges was making the CCM strong enough for the job while keeping it within strict weight limits. Additionally, ensuring that the cutter could reach the required burial depth for the cables posed a significant design challenge, which we successfully overcame.
At a later stage of the project, we were also asked to manufacture the Jetting Lance, a high-quality steel tool measuring 20 meters that is used to fluidize and bury the cable into the seabed. The Jetting Lance was built under the full supervision of DNV-GL, ensuring compliance with the highest industry standards.
We sincerely want to thank Boskalis for their trust in us to execute both projects and for allowing us to be part of the project team over the past years.
